What Is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)? A Guide for Business Owners

Answer engine optimisation, usually shortened to AEO, is the practice of getting your business quoted by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity when someone asks them a question. This guide to answer engine optimization explains what AEO is, how it differs from traditional SEO, and whether your business needs to care about it yet.

The Short Answer

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so that AI answer engines select it as the source for their answer. Traditional SEO aims to rank a page in a list of search results. AEO aims to have your content chosen as the answer itself.

The two overlap heavily. Most good AEO is good search engine optimization done with more discipline. What has changed is the reward: instead of earning a click from position three, you are earning a citation inside an AI response that many users will never click past.

What Is an Answer Engine?

An answer engine is any system that responds to a query with a direct answer rather than a list of links.

That includes answer engines like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity AI, Microsoft Copilot and Claude, but it also includes Google Search itself. Google AI Overviews now sit above the traditional search engine results page for a large share of queries, summarising several sources into a single answer. Featured snippets and the answer box were an earlier version of the same idea.

The common thread is that these AI-powered answer engines do not rank pages so much as select sources. An AI system reads a set of candidate pages, decides which ones are trustworthy and relevant, and synthesises an answer from them. Your content either makes it into that answer or it does not.

You will also see the term generative engine optimization, or GEO, used almost interchangeably with AEO. The distinction people draw is that AEO focuses on being the answer to a specific question, while GEO focuses more broadly on brand visibility inside generative AI responses. In practice the work behind SEO and AEO is largely the same.

Why the Rise of AEO Matters Now

Search behaviour has changed faster in the past two years than in the previous ten.

A growing share of search queries never produce a click at all. The user asks a question, the AI answers it, and the session ends. For informational content in particular, that is a structural change in how traffic reaches websites, and it is not reversing.

The businesses that lose from this are the ones producing generic content that AI can summarise without needing to name anybody. The businesses that gain are the ones whose content is specific, authoritative and quotable enough that the AI names them as the source. A citation inside an AI-driven answer carries real weight, because the user has been told by a system they trust that you are the credible source.

This shift also rewards smaller businesses more than the last decade of SEO did. AI platforms are less dependent on raw domain authority and backlink volume than traditional ranking systems. A genuinely expert page from a small consultancy can be cited alongside a page from a global brand.

How Answer Engines Choose What to Cite

Nobody outside these companies has the full picture, but the patterns are consistent across AI platforms.

Directness. Content that answers the question immediately, in the first sentence or two, gets selected far more often than content that builds up to an answer over six paragraphs.

Structure. Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables are easy for an AI system to parse and lift. Walls of undifferentiated text are not. Answer formats matter as much as answer quality.

Specificity. Real numbers, named examples, dates and concrete detail are far more citable than vague generalisation. “SEO takes three to six months for early movement” is quotable. “SEO takes time” is not.

Demonstrable expertise. Named authors with real credentials, stated experience and a consistent presence across the web signal that content came from someone who knows the subject.

Entity consistency. AI models build a picture of who you are from every mention of you across the web. If your business name, description, location and specialism are described consistently everywhere, the AI can form a confident view. If they conflict, it will not risk citing you.

Corroboration. Claims that align with what other credible sources say are safer for an AI to repeat. Being mentioned on other reputable sites matters more than ever, though as a trust signal rather than as a backlink.

How to Implement AEO: The Practical Work

1. Answer the question first

Put the direct answer immediately after the heading, before any context or preamble. If a heading is a question, the next sentence should answer it in plain language. Everything else can follow.

This single change does more for AEO performance than anything else on this list, and it costs nothing.

2. Use question-shaped headings

Build your content strategy around the actual questions people ask, phrased the way they ask them. Conversational queries are longer and more natural than keyword searches, and a heading that mirrors them gives answer engines an obvious match. The People Also Ask box is a useful source of these.

3. Add schema markup

Structured data tells search engines and AI systems explicitly what your content is rather than making them infer it. The most useful schema markup types for most businesses are FAQPage for question and answer sections, Article with a named author, LocalBusiness or Organization for your business details, and Product or Service where relevant.

Schema markup is not a magic switch, but it removes ambiguity, and ambiguity is what stops an AI system citing you.

4. Build genuine FAQ sections

An FAQ block with real questions and complete, self-contained answers is close to the ideal AEO content format. Each answer should make sense lifted out of the page entirely, because that is exactly what will happen to it.

5. Make your expertise visible

Name your authors. State their experience. Link to their professional profiles on LinkedIn and elsewhere. An article attributed to “admin” gives an answer engine nothing to assess, while one attributed to a named specialist with fifteen years in the field gives it a reason to trust the content.

6. Keep your entity signals consistent

Your business name, address, description and specialism should match across your website, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories and anywhere else you appear. Inconsistency creates doubt, and AI systems resolve doubt by citing somebody else.

7. Earn mentions, not just links

Being referenced by name on credible sites, in industry publications, in roundups and on forums such as Reddit all feed the training data and retrieval sources these systems draw on. Reddit in particular appears disproportionately often in AI responses.

8. Cover topics properly

Answer engines favour sources that demonstrably understand a subject rather than sites with one thin page about it. Depth across a topic, with pages that genuinely interlink, builds the topical authority that makes citation more likely.

How to Measure AEO Performance

This is the least mature part of the discipline, and anyone claiming precise measurement is overselling. What you can practically do:

  • Ask the major answer engines questions your customers would ask, and record whether you appear. Repeat monthly
  • Watch referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics, which is small but growing and increasingly separable
  • Track branded search volume, since people who encounter you in an AI answer often search your name afterwards
  • Monitor Google Search Console for impressions on question-shaped queries
  • Use one of the emerging AI visibility tools, with the caveat that the category is young and the data is imperfect

Expect measurement to improve considerably over the next couple of years. In the meantime, the practical test is simply whether the AI names you when asked what you do.

Common AEO Mistakes

  • Burying the answer under three paragraphs of scene-setting
  • Publishing generic content that any competitor could have written, which gives AI no reason to cite you specifically
  • Adding structured data that does not match what is actually on the page
  • Treating AEO and SEO as separate disciplines, when the technical foundation is shared
  • Anonymous authorship with no stated expertise
  • Inconsistent business information across the web
  • Chasing AI visibility while ignoring conversion, since a citation that sends nobody anywhere useful is worth very little

Does Your Business Need AEO Yet?

If you sell anything where customers research before buying, then yes, and sooner than most people assume.

The case is strongest for professional services, healthcare, legal, financial services, trades and any business where the customer asks questions before choosing a supplier. Those are exactly the queries answer engines handle well, and exactly the moments where being named as the credible source converts.

The case is weaker for pure impulse retail and for businesses whose customers arrive through channels other than search entirely.

For most local service businesses the honest position is this: you do not need a separate AEO budget. You need your existing SEO done in a way that happens to be AEO-friendly, which costs no more and produces better content anyway.

The Future of AEO

Two things look reasonably safe to predict.

First, AI visibility tools and measurement will mature quickly, because demand for them is enormous and the current data is poor. Within a couple of years, tracking AI citations will likely be as routine as tracking rankings is now.

Second, the gap between generic and genuinely expert content will widen. As AI handles more of the summarising, the only content worth publishing is content an AI cannot produce itself: real experience, real numbers, real judgement. That is a better outcome for good businesses than the last decade of SEO was.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimisation, also written as answer engine optimization. AEO is the practice of optimising content so that AI answer engines and search engines select it as the source for direct answers.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. It is extending it. Traditional organic search still drives the large majority of website traffic, and the technical foundations of search engine optimization, including site speed, crawlability, structure and authority, are prerequisites for AEO rather than alternatives to it. Treat AEO as a discipline layered on top of SEO, not a replacement for it.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Answer engine optimisation focuses on being selected as the answer to a specific question. Generative engine optimization focuses more broadly on how your brand appears within generative AI responses. The underlying work is largely identical, and the terms are increasingly used interchangeably.

How long does AEO take to work?

Faster than traditional SEO in some respects, because AI systems retrieve and re-evaluate content frequently rather than waiting on ranking cycles. Structural improvements to existing pages can influence AI responses within weeks. Building the entity consistency and third-party mentions that underpin AI visibility takes months.

Does schema markup guarantee AI citations?

No. Structured data makes your content easier to interpret, which improves your chances, but it does not override quality or authority. Schema on thin content simply helps AI systems understand that the content is thin.

Can a small business compete with big brands in AI search?

More easily than in traditional search. Answer engines weigh relevance, specificity and demonstrable expertise heavily, and are less dominated by raw domain authority than conventional rankings. A genuinely expert page from a small consultancy can and does get cited alongside global brands.

What is the single most effective AEO change?

Answering the question directly in the first sentence under each heading. It costs nothing, requires no technical work, and it is the change that most reliably moves content from being ignored to being quoted.
